Company’s Use of Job Applicants’ Credit History Discriminates Because of Race, Federal Agency Charges

CLEVELAND – Kaplan Higher Education Corporation, a nationwide provider of postsecondary education, engaged in a pattern or practice of unlawful discrimination by refusing to hire a class of black job applicants nationwide, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) charged in a lawsuit it announced today.

Since at least 2008, Kaplan Higher Education has rejected job applicants based on their credit history. This practice has an unlawful discriminatory impact because of race and is neither job-related nor justified by business necessity, the EEOC charged in its lawsuit.

As a result of these practices, the company has violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, according to the lawsuit (Civil Action No. 1:10-cv-02882) filed by the EEOC’s Cleveland Field Office in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. It is a violation of Title VII to use hiring practices that have a discriminatory impact because of race and that are not job-related and justified by business necessity.

The EEOC attempted to reach a voluntary settlement before filing suit. The EEOC seeks injunctive relief in its lawsuit, as well as lost wages and benefits and offers of employment for people who were not hired because of Kaplan Higher Education’s use of job applicants’ credit history.

“Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was intended to eliminate practices that serve as arbitrary barriers to employment because of a job applicant’s race,” said Regional Attorney Debra Lawrence of the EEOC’s Philadelphia District Office, which oversees Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Virginia, Maryland, and portions of New Jersey and Ohio. “Employers need to be mindful that any hiring practice be job-related and not screen out groups of people, even if it does so unintentionally.”

Workplace discrimination charge filings with the federal agency nationwide rose to an unprecedented level of 99,922 during fiscal year 2010.

Ah, social networking. You’ve come a long way and everyone’s using it. But maybe it wasn’t meant for grandpa or Grandma Sue, or that person who continues to blog and re-tweet about their shiny dog’s paw bracelet. Leave it to TheFrisky.com, (www.thefrisky.com), the website covering everything that matters to women 18-34 to point out some of the most annoying ways people have abused sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Amelia McDonell-Parry, Editor-in-Chief of TheFrisky.com shares some of her entertaining (and sad but true) examples below:

1. Hint, Hint, Hint: People who use their tweets or status updates to send not-at-all-subtle messages to someone on their friend or follow list make me extremely uncomfortable. For example:

“I’m thinking about you. Yeah, you. You know what you did. And I won’t ever forget it.”

This move is not only passive-aggressive, but it’s downright weird and creepy.

2. Become A Fan (Of Me!): Here are some of the things I am a “fan” of on Facebook: Barack Obama, The Beach, Breakfast Tacos, Ryan Gosling, and I Heart Sleep. I am not a fan of my best friend from first grade or my mom or my boyfriend, so why the eff would I be a fan of you, person with no discernible talent who I don’t know nearly as well? People who create fan pages for themselves, even though they don’t do anything, make me crazy. I get a little shiver of delight every time I enthusiastically IGNORE these requests.

3. Manic And Excessive Retweeting: Really, you loved four dozen 140-character tweets by other people so much, that you had to retweet all of them within the span of an hour? I get the occasional retweet, when something someone says makes you laugh hysterically, or a link totally strikes your fancy—but seriously, do not retweet every single thing from The New York Times and your great aunt Mildred because it litters my feed, dammit.

4. Bragging: This one is a personal beef of mine, linked directly to my own jealousy. I wish I got two weeks off and went on vacation over the holiday, but I didn’t and that’s cool, whatevs. But on Monday my Facebook feed was littered with braggy, annoying messages like:

“Ugh, I SO wish I was back in Peru smooching my boo on the beach instead of at work. Can I have another month off, like, now? Guess life could be worse, right?”

Right. Screw you.

5. “Excessive” Use Of QUOTES And ALL CAPS For “Emphasis”: This was posted as a status update over the holidays by a member of my own immediate family:

“Where the hell did the last TEN YEARS go?!?! Oh well…“au revoir” ‘09…I won’t miss ya! 2010, I’ll rise again! (No, uh…not “Jesus”...ME! I’ll “rise” to meet the challenges instead of lettin’ them BEAT ME this time!)”

Being this is my kin we’re talking about, I cannot defriend him or her, though I suppose I could gift him or her with an AP Stylebook for Christmas next year ...

6. Twitter Is Not Your Fitness Diary: “Just ran five miles, off to yoga!” “Wow, can’t believe I did 20 pull-ups five days in a row!” “Ugh, so sore from yesterday’s three hour triathlon training sesh. Gonna take it easy today and just do Bikram.” Your constant tweets about how much you work out are giving the rest of us fat slobs a complex and we are unfollowing you so that we can eat cheese doodles in peace. Buh-bye.

Don't take your frustrations or anger out on other people. You may not mean it, but others won't forget.

Learn to control your emotions, channel into constructive energy, where you can use it in positive ways. Is it worth regretting something you could've controlled, but didn't?

Is it me or are a lot of people beginning to become overweight? Seriously. Every where I go, I notice that men and women are becoming bigger in all directions. I know our lives have become more sedentary and that a person has to seek exercise, however, we need to be reminded that it is not natural for our bodies become this heavy.

So, why not incorporate walking into your schedule if you already are not doing that. For example, this morning, my son and I walked to school. It took us about 15 minutes one way. I walked back on my own again. I have included nearly 30 minutes of exercise this morning. Not only, was I exercising my body, I also became more aware of my surroundings while I was walking. I had to time to observe and time to think.

When we take time for ourselves, not only do families and ourselves benefit, even the environment benefits because you are using less gas for instance.

So, did you walk today?

These are questions that have come to mind lately. People need to slow down and not lose themselves in this world without reflecting on their own actions and how it might affect those around them. If need to, as a rule of thumb, self-reflection should take place as little as every six months or even every couple of months.

For example, if you decide to do it at six months: you should think what kinds of things were accomplished the past six months, what you liked, what you didn't like, and then look at six months in advance and decide what you like and will keep, areas that need improvement and areas that need changing.

You would feel surprised at how well you feel.

More Students Going to School?

Yesterday, I met one of my college colleagues at a Subway, and she had told me that her office at the community college was fielding 300 calls per day, and she mentioned that she wasn't sure how the other offices were doing. People were standing in lines waiting to register for classes. My colleague continued to say that people couldn't choose which class or section to sign up for, instead many were put on the waiting list. She said that new classes may be formed to accommodate all those students. I had asked her why did she think that that everyone was going back to school. She had mentioned she wasn't sure, so I started thinking about it and asking others their ideas.

Here are some:

The economy is getting better, and so companies are offering education as incentives.
The federal government is offering more financial aid.
Loans may be available for people.
The recession was a wake up call for many to improve their lifestyle through education.

Random Thought: Quit Being Mean

Lately, I have been hearing negative stories about people mistreating each other. Why? The irony of this whole activity is that people forget that life is not permanent, but temporary. Is it necessary to be rude to some one and then regret it later?

Self-control and discipline are key here. People need to learn or practice in self-controlling and self-disciplining themselves. Society doesn't make it any easier because of its heavily pro-stance on instant gratification. Quick fixes and impulses are not the way to live a happy and well-balanced life with our fellow humans. Sometimes, the old fashion is the best way.

Start one step at a time. Become consciously aware of your thoughts and actions. Do it.

Illinois to start using Photo Radar in July

Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July. One mile per hour over the speed limit and the machine will get you a nice $375.00 ticket in the mail. Beginning July 1st, the State of Illinois will begin using the speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones" on major freeways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00 ticket for the FIRST offense. The SECOND offense will cost $1000.00 and comes with a 90-Day suspension. Drivers will also receive demerit points against their license, which allow insurance companies to raise Insurance rates

This is the harshest penalty structure ever set for a governmental unit involving PHOTO speed enforcement. The State already has two camera vans on line issuing tickets 24/7 in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH. Photos of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken. Things That Make You Go Hmmm...

Despite the way some people act with each other, I still believe in humanity. We just have to work harder in being an ideal population.

Just thought I would share with you some interesting things that we have to work on to strengthen humanity. These are true events that happened in a small town.

Event 1:

I was recently invited for coffee and cake at a friend's home, when all of us were telling the hostess which neighbors we knew in her neighborhood. I and several others mentioned that we had sent donations of food to one of her neighbor's across the street. Another friend mentioned the neighbor's name. Our hostess said that she did not know that family because they had moved about four months ago. Needless to say, our hostess felt a little embarrassed not knowing that her own neighbor was in need of assistance.

Lesson learned (I am sure you can learn more): Get to know your neighbors. Visit them, especially when they first move to the neighborhood.

Event 2:

Due to schedule conflicts, I finally had the chance to meet with a friend. Her son and mine are friends since preschool days. I took with me one bag of candies and another bag of chocolates since it was awhile when I last socialized with my friend. I visited with my friend while our sons played for 2.5 hours, and not once did my friend offer something to drink or eat. She didn't even offer my son a drink of water, after he came in from playing outside sweating. He asked for it. My friend also opened the bag of chocolates and ate one in front of me, not offering any.

My friend's family has money. They travel the world. They have expensive tastes. To me there is a difference of being frugal and cheap. This is really cheap.

Now the point is not eating or drinking, but hospitality. What happened to being hospitable? Are the days of entertaining guests formally or casually die? Is it the norm to expect not to be offered things when you attend gatherings?

Yesterday, I had the privilege and honor to help deliver 300 pounds of food and household items to a family in need in my area. One of my friends who was helping told us not to expect emotions or feelings from the family for a variety of reasons.

When we arrived at the home, it seemed like a sad home. A home that was in need of desperate repair. The homeowner, a father on leave from the U.S. Reserves, opened the door and smiled to greet us. Although his eyes looked sad, he managed a smile and a warm welcome. Three friends, the homeowner and I carried the boxes and bags of donated items.

After we about 15 minutes, we were done. He invited us to meet his wife who is recovering and slowly gaining back movement in her body. She was paralyzed and is making a miraculous recovery through their strong belief in their religious faith. Her husband has been unemployed since he came back from the U.S. Reserves to take care of his wife, 24 hours/7 days per week. They have five children, two of them on disability. The wife was working before she came down with an infection, leaving her temporarily paralyzed.

We chitchatted with the family for about 20 more minutes. Then we left. Since I left their home, I have been thinking about them and how we can help them some more. I do know that a local school is having a golf tournament on the family's behalf to help pay for medical bills.

I have been on a "Happy High". I was happy all day yesterday and even today. I haven't felt like that in a very long time.

My Dear People of Gaza,

Words can't even describe what I want to say. Tears form into my eyes as I painfully put some thoughts together. My tears are of pain and humiliation of the way our fellow humans are acting to one another.

Peoples of the world are with you and pray for your safety and well being. We are so sorry that we can't do more than participate in protests and demonstrations. We are constantly thinking of you. We are using our voice to try to demand a humanitarian change, despite our religious and political beliefs.

This is not a great way to start a brand new year. Stay strong and continue to have faith. The spirit of the Palestinians never die. In fact, it strengthens. Know that although governments aren't running to your aid, that the people are angry.

History books will show this as an intolerant and tyrannical event, an embarrassment to humanity because these types of intolerance have been throughout history with different types of people. Often times, it is the oppressed being the oppressor.

We think of you oh people of Gaza. We shall do our best to put pressure on public policies and our governments to do something. We will continue to work until we see our brothers and sisters of Gaza happy.

When you bleed, we bleed. When you cry, we cry. When you are happy, we are happy. We are Gaza. We are Palestinians.

You know what has been bugging me lately? Drivers who tailgate for no apparent reason. I have been on the road a lot lately, so I try to be a safe driver by going the speed limit or a couple of miles over. What has been really annoying lately, is that cars tailgate you even if you are going past the speed limit (not saying that I go WAY over--just up to 5 miles over at times).

Show courtesy to others around you. Don't be selfish.

If you need to tailgate, I suggest you leave earlier than usual to avoid patterns of heavy traffic.

It is not worth a road rage.

To discipline him.
To help him focus.
To entertain him.
To help him make new friends while maintaining his old friends.

Whatever your reasons are, do let your child play sports because those will benefit him or her in the long run!

Poverty Awareness Should Be Everyday, not Just Today

I am all for days of promoting special topics, holidays, and interests, however, I do feel certain topics should not just have a special day, it should be everyday especially if it concerns humanity, like poverty does.
In the blogging world, bloggers are posting about poverty in honor of Blog Action Day. Just Google and you will find many posts written about poverty from different perspectives and different view points.

I am going to list a bunch of questions for you to think and reflect about. Some may be painful, some may not be.

Is your neighbor hungry while you eat?
Did you buy your child's 20th toy within the couple of months?
Did you just throw some food away because you didn't feel like dealing with leftovers?
Did you buy yourself a top of the line sports car while your brother suffers in debt which were not to his doing?
Did you throw gently used clothing in the garbage?
Did you throw recyclable items in the trash?
Did you insult person of lesser wealth today?
Did you smile at a passing stranger?
Did you thank your cashier today?
Did you thank your teacher today?
How about your mom and dad?
Did you volunteer? You know give back to your community?

Study your own life. There ways to improve. Poverty can happen to anyone, so it is best to be humble and not arrogant because what comes around can go around.

Remember those who are in need.

Customer Service is STILL a Must

Just because we are becoming more advanced in technology, doesn't mean that we must through customer service out the window. In fact, customer service can make or break a business because of the increase in services and products due to technology and other variables.

Plenty of people will change businesses if they feel they are not being respected by them. I did that. I wasn't very satisfied at this one business I was dealing with that I decided to leave there and go to another business, although I have been there for more than 10 years. It wasn't a hard decision for me because I know of other businesses who deal with their customers in a kinder fashion.

So my point is don't feel like you have to stick with a certain type of business if you are not happy as a customer. Don't let the times fool you. Customer service is STILL a must.

Over the past five years, 200,000 civilians have died due to violence, malnutrition, and disease in Darfur and an additional 2.2 million people have been displaced. We want to do something about it.

Fed up with watching humanitarian crises on the evening news and not doing anything to help, a group of bloggers (most notably, Leo Babauta of Zen Habits) have created and founded the non-profit Train for Humanity, which is an online humanitarian awareness and fundraising organization.

Over 150,000 new blogs are added to the internet everday. Train for Humanity’s mission is to utilize the web, social media, and blogging, in tandem with athletes in training, to support organizations that help prevent suffering and alleviate the pain of children, orphans, and refugees who have been displaced due to genocide or internal strife and war within their country.

Quite simply, they believe - getting fit + social media + blogging = social good

The three pilot project athlete-bloggers, Mark Hayward, Dan Clements, and Leo Babauta are hoping to raise awareness for the current crisis in Darfur and funds for the organization Darfur Peace and Development. You begin to see the beauty of nature. You become more aware of the intricate details that make up your environment. You can't help yourself, but think about how you blend with your environment. It is a great time to reflect and contemplate.

Walking everyday is a form of discipline that you will eventually feel the benefits.

My spouse and I were discussing about what to do with our television programming when the bill reached $120 per month. We don't watch much television, and we both agreed we don't want our son to watch too much either.

So, my spouse called the cable company and told them he was going to discontinue the cable. They both agreed to basic cable with a discount. We still don't watch that much television anyways. The only channel we now turn to is PBS Kids for my son. That is it.

Since we have done that, which has been about one week so far, it feels better. Not only did we save money, we are not wasting our brains. We are not being influenced by pop culture. My son will not be exposed to sexual or racial innuendos at an early age.

My son has played more creatively with his toys, spent time with us, and is now more into books. He has become more creative and inquisitive. He has even learned to ride his bike without training wheels at the age of four. Our son has even been a bit calmer.

I am not saying television is a total waste, but it can be if you let it be. Besides what is a better way for your child or spouse to spend their time with--you or the television?

Benefits of WII

Normally, I wouldn't blog about video games or systems, but I honestly found something different about Wii.

I don't know much about the Wii. I do know it is hard to get in some areas because of its great prices.

Let me tell you why, I like Wii. It all started on Sunday, March 16, 2008. We were invited to come over to my parents' home for brunch. We had heard about my brother buying the Wii Saturday. We went for brunch and to see the Wii.

I saw my brother relaxing on the couch when I asked him to hook up the Wii because my son would like to try it. (At the time I really meant my son).

He hooked it up, and it turned out that my spouse, son, brother and myself played bowling using the Wii as a motion. You literally had to "bowl". Depending how fast you "bowled", depending how fast the bowling ball hit the pins. There are even other sports you can play as well. There is tennis, golf, boxing, batting, bowling, and physical training.

This is a great item to get for families from the grandchildren to the grandparents. It is perfect for ages 3-over 100. Here you are spending time with each other. You are encouraging each other to achieve the goal of the support. There is even laughter involved as you observe the player's responses and reactions. You even begin to talk about those sports and can see how much your family may enjoy something you never realized.

Physically, Wii is a GREAT workout for all players because in some of the sports, you literally had to move the Wii control with force as if the hit or throw was literally real. Depending on how much you play with the Wii, you can become physically tired--as if you worked out. There is even a brief message on Wii to take a break before playing another game.

Don't Buy Cold Medicines for Young Children

Yesterday, I took my son to the doctor because he had his cough off and on for the past few weeks. It would get better, stop, and then resume again. The doctor checked him out, and said, "Your son has allergies because it is turning into spring. The snow is releasing mold and soon-pollen in the air."

I then told my son's pediatrician that I had given him a cold-cough medicine, but I had seen it on the shelves again at one of our stores, and asked the pharmacist about it, which she had said it was ok now to give to young children.

So my recommendation to Parents is this: Consult your child's doctor before going out and purchasing cold-cough medicines for your children. I would hate for you to lose your money with something that doesn't really help your children at all.

It saddens me to write that there has been a tragedy happening at Northern Illinois University (NIU), in DeKalb, IL, on February 14, 2008. There is about five students and the gunman who passed away from this incident.

Violence, especially in an academic environment is not a solution to any of the world's problems. It just worsens it by bringing people fear each other, instead of trust each other. This is not what we need. I get teary-eyed when I think of what the students and professors were going through.

Let us remember those who are victims of violence. May they rest in peace.

Don't Stress During the Holidays, You're Not Supposed To

Right now there is Hanakah, Eid al Adha, Christmas and Kawanza, just to name a few during this month.

Each group will be celebrating spiritually and with family. There also may be presents involved as well.

However, what is becoming a common observation is STRESS. Plenty of my friends complain about how much Christmas is costing them and how their tasks of to do things and planning keeps getting longer, where it has now become a burden.

Is that right? I don't think so. I have given ideas to my friends saying skip the presents and celebrate in simplicity (because I believe less is more). Limit gifts, I say. Make handmade gifts. Have loved ones help in making dinners and deserts. I could keep going.

To me, no matter what religion you practice, a holiday is a holiday--not a "helliday". This is the time where you should use this for spiritual or reflective purposes. This is the time to contemplate on your existence and how you can improve your own life--how to be a better human.

Holidays are time to make us humble, and not to forget the less fortunate around us and outside our countries.

So, I offer you a holiday challenge. Instead of worrying about how many gifts and groceries to buy, reflect on the meaning of your life.

Reflect on how you can help the needs of improving humanity.

Just reflect. You will be surprised.

I am always reading to find great ideas while my spouse and I are raising our child. It is not uncommon to see my nose in a parenting magazine or in front of the computer on the Internet.

So imagine my surprise when I read a parenting tip about how some parents teach their children about giving and appreciating their toys while helping others. Are you ready for the wisdom? I thought it was FANTASTIC!

For every new toy your child receives, he or she must donate that same amount of toys to other children less fortunate (with parent permission and supervision). So for example, if your child received two new toys today, then he or she must donate two of their toys. If your child received four toys, then four of their toys are donated.

Be sure to explain to your child where their old toys are going. Be sure to also make sure broken toys are not donated, but thrown out or recycled.

Just yesterday, I did that with my son. He received a set of 12 cars, so he went though his toy box and give me 12 of his toys to be donated to a local organization.

After friends heard what I was doing, they had said to each other, "Isn't *boy child* going to be the neatest person when he grows up?"

I just want my child to be a lover of humanity--that is all.

Call it a "green" movement, organization, or whatever you want to call it, Freecycle is something to consider in joining if you hate to fill the landfills because those things may still be usable or someone else could benefit from them. According to Freecycle's website: "It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills."

In other words, Freecycle is not a charity to help the less fortunate, but to pollute the Earth less which is important for generations to come. I think it is a neat concept because it shows that we as individuals or as a collective group can help improve the Earth in different ways.

There are over 4,000 Freecycle groups with more than 4 million members worldwide. You do not join a general international group. What you do is find your own town or county, and sign up at the local level. I had learned about this organization from a friend who is an avid user of Freecycle, so I assigned up, I will be sure to write a post about my experience in the near future.

The Tale of the Wooden Bowl

I guarantee you will remember the tale of the Wooden Bowl tomorrow, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now...

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and 4 yr old grandson.

The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together every night at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. "We must do something about father," said the son. "I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor."

So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl!

When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.

The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up."

The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

People Just Want to Make Friends

Today, I realized that people really just want to make friends, but are afraid to be rejected, so we create organization, associations and civic clubs. We sign our children up in sports and other types of activities.

That is how a majority of us make friends through those types of venues. Should it only be that way? Shouldn't we start a friendship based on a smile?

The realistic answer is you can't always because of the way the world is today, but I do believe that one day it could be possible.

Each blogger may focus on different aspects on the environment as part of Blog Action Day. Talking about the environment may overwhelm many due to the largeness of our Earth. But it doesn't have to be. What you do locally, has an impact globally.

Here are some ways that you can help save the environment:

1. Recycle. Today you can recycle paper, boxes, bags, aluminium, plus many more things.

2. Turn off lights when rooms are not in use. That helps save electricity which helps save the environment.

3. Don't buy Styrofoam because that takes longer to dissolve in the earth.

4. Don't throw batteries away. There are proper ways to dispose batteries.

5. Carpool when you can.

More Funds Needed in 2008: Contact Your Senators Now

The 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill (S. 1710) is scheduled to go before the Senate next week, possibly as soon as Tuesday. This bill provides federal funds for education, but not enough.

The Senate bill...

includes an overall education funding increase of $2.6 billion—4.3 percent more than the 2007 funding level.

is $1.6 billion less that the funding bill passed by the House, which provides an increase of $4.2 billion, or 7.4 percent more than the previous year.
At a time when schools need more resources and support, the Senate bill falls short on vital funding increases, especially for teacher quality programs.

Please contact your Senators and urge them to support amendments that would increase education funding to reflect the numbers provided in the House-passed bill.

I meant to do this yesterday.

I want to give a shout out to my Muslims friends out there. A Happy Ramadan to all of you. May God fulfill your wishes and needs. Amen.

For those of you who don't know, Ramadan is a month of fasting for Muslims around the world, fasting from sunrise to sunset each day. No food, drinking, or sexual activity is permitted during the day. (Yes, that means no gum or smoking). Not all Muslims are required to fast, for examples young children and the elderly are an exception. There are many more of course.

After about 29 or 30 days, there is a three day celebration by Muslims, called Eid al Fitr (The Holiday Feast).

I am for diversity and cultures. So, when I heard about this project, I thought I would post it here, so that my readers will be able to participate or tell others about it.

Here is a your chance to help a youngster located in England. This youngster, 13, is interested in collecting postcards from around the U.S. and the rest of the world. His mother, located, is in the U.S. She is collecting postcards to send to her son, so that he can add to his collection.

Hitting the 1,000th mark

I have hit a new milestone. I have reached the 1,000th view on this blog, what an awesome feeling. I will continue to post, allowing you to interpret the way you want to.

Since I have begun posting, I have grown as a person and a writer as I posted on this blog. I have learned to look at things differently or expand some of my thinking even further. I hope I have done this for some of my readers, and will continue to do so.

Class went well

My students and I had our first class meeting. I would say about 22 students are freshmen and sophomores, while 8 students are juniors and seniors. I would say it is a somewhat diverse class. I explained to students my expectations and standards for this class. I was trying to get them to talk more. Because majority of these students freshmen and sophomores, they will need to become comfortable with my class, each other and me.

I will be sure to keep my readers posted throughout the semester. If you are a college student, how is your first couple of days?

My Fall Semester Begins

It is time for me again--to teach my kids. That is what I call my college students. I am probably only a few years older than some of them, some are even a few years older than me. But I affectionately call my students "my kids." I don't know why, maybe because I enjoy what I do?

I always try to start on a positive note because students are people. People have lives filled with problems, solutions, emotions, you name it. I don't believe my class should be a burden to their lives, but a benefit. That is why I base my class about them. So that they can think about themselves and everyone else. Reflection on one's life is extremely important to grow as a person.

Not all students welcome my theories or opinions because they feel it is not the traditional teaching in a university setting. However, by the end of the semester, those once reluctant students say my course has been one of the best courses they have taken.

Sometimes, people are afraid of something new, until they give it a try! I will keep you posted after Wednesday's night's class.

Saturday Surprise: Kid Games

Who knew games for children can be sooooooooooooooo complicated to put together! I mean you nearly have to be a rocket scientist to figure some of the parts of the game out. I was putting the pieces of Mouse Trap together for my son. It took me more than 30 minutes to complete the game set, so my son and I could play. Turns out, we are not supposed to build the pieces because we are supposed to add building pieces during the game! Oh well, I thought. So, we ended up improvising Mouse Trap, as we played. My son was more interested in the traps than the board game itself.

I figure if Mouse Trap survives a few more years, then we can attempt to play this game correctly. If not, I will sure not miss it!

Summer Vacation

I have been on summer vacation from blogging because I was wrapping up a summer class I was teaching, and I also had family matters to take care of. I am happy to say that I am pleased with the way those matters ended.

Things I learned from my class: students DO listen, even if they appear like they are not. I had one student told me that he enjoyed my class, that he regretted not taking it in the fall or spring times. He sincerely meant it. Many students nodded in agreement. Some students stayed after on the last day of class to watch The Freedom Writers Diary film (a very good one by the way).

Things I learned from my family: is not to take anyone for granted. Enjoy what each family member has to offer, and not to nit pick on each other's qualities. Why should we? Enjoy them for who they are and what they have to offer. Family is a building block. We are all interdependent on each other.

Now, I am spending more time with my family, and loving it. I also will begin preparing for the fall semester. I will keep you updated. I am in the process of looking for interesting books for my students to read. I am going to have them read the Freedom Writers Diary again. If you have suggestions for what other books I shall use for my education course that focuses on today's issues, let me know. Post your comments, and I will consider them.

Don't you just hate those people? You know the ones who everytime open their mouths to offer a negative or condescending comment to you are or about someone else. I am not sure exactly why they (the critics, no not movie or food critics, but anti-social ones) are always "offering" their "advice," especially when advice is not being seeked or asked. Yet, the critics don't expect you to become upset or annoyed. Critics think they are doing you a favor by "offering" their "advice or expertise." Thank you for point out that I have a zit on my nose. You think I haven't noticed it?? Are those types of comments really necesary. You think that a person wants to be reminded of a zit?

The funny thing is when you do that to a critic, you know give them a taste of their own medicine; they get angry. How dare you "criticize"! You must be jealous of them or their successes. No need to be an angry person, settle.

People do not want to be criticized or be spoken to in a condescending manner. We all have faults of our owns, yes even the anti-social critics. Until we are able to perfect the human by eliminating faults or weaknesses, then we maybe, I mean a BIG MAYBE, we can then "offer our advice." Yes, there is a catch in perfecting humans. All humans have to agree on a definition of a perfect standard, you know a universal meaning where ALL cultures agree to those definitions. Until we are able to do so, then we should accept each other the way we are and not point any faults or weaknesses.

So quit being an anti-social critic.

The other day in class (I am teaching an education course at a local university this summer), a student tells me that she has started volunteering at the local homeless shelter because of my class.

Let me explain a bit, one of the assignments I sign is called "New Event". Students have to try something out of their comfort zone, something totally new--outside of their daily life. After completing that event, they have to write a reflection of that experience and their thoughts.

Many students have told me that this assignment has made them think or become more aware of themselves and their actions. Back to the above student, she told me that has been volunteering since she completed this assignment. I asked her how did she start volunteering. She told me, that she went to the homeless shelter, and spent time with some of the children. They touched her heart. She spoke with the assistant director, and scheduled regular volunteer dates. She has never done this sort of thing before. She said she feels really good about what she is doing, and this has broken stereotypes for her.

I told her that I was very proud of her, and good for her to help make a positive change.

Another student commented that she had been thinking about what we had talked about in a previous class.

I thought hmmm...

Then, I smiled as I began my session for the day.

Is Race Really An Issue?

That is what I asked my students. I asked them, "Is Race Really An Issue?" Most of them said not as much as years ago. Things are looking better, they insist. Sure there might be occasional incidents, but overall racial issues have improved. I have noticed more students tend not to dwell on controversial issues or topics. It makes them uncomfortable.

We need discussions because this will help reduce problems. We need ideas because this will be applied towards solutions.

It's Your Responsibility--Not Mine

People need to take responsibilities for their own actions. People need to plan ahead for themselves and their families. When a misfortunes comes along their way, then chances are they will be ready to deal with it as best they can. However, when there is no responsibility of planning involved and a misfortune occurs, it is not everyone else's fault, but the irresponsible. So, the irresponsibles cannot blame others for their miseries and failures. It is not fair for the responsible to bail out the irresponsible for their mistakes.

Just some ramblings going on in my mind lately.

I thought this was an interesting article, stating that Midwesterners in the U.S. are more likely to volunteer than their counterparts (Easterners, Westerners, etc.). Your mother was right. If you cannot say something nice, do not say anything at all. Why should people be criticized or insulted because you cannot resist the urge to "spoil" the atmosphere or the mood of that poor soul? Seriously. Put yourself in that person's position. How would you feel? Annoyed, I am sure.

So, the next time you have the urge to "insult" a poor soul for no real reason, remember yourself and how you would feel if that happened to you. Instead ask that person, how are they feeling and how is life.

Special circumstances

I apologize for not posting yesterday. I have had special circumstances that I could not post. However, I am hoping that this circumstance will improve, so everything could be the same or even better.

During this time right now, family has come together. Unfortunately, we don't always come together during non circumstances times. There are some I haven't seen in a couple of years except for the past two days.

Family is a vital thing in society and is strongly needed to help each other through trying times. Yet, family should be there in good times as well. How many people in this world to not know their family? Immediate or Extended? If people had strong family units, society would have less problems because people would be held accountable by their family members.

People say yes, but friends can do the same. Not always because it depends on your meaning of friends. Even most religions emphasize the family thing. If you already have a strong family unit, good for you. Keep it up. If you have a weak family unit, try to strengthen it. If you don't have a family unit, try to build it.
